![]() ![]() I’ve used Surfshark with all of them and it’s worked 99% of the time. I’m a super binge-watcher, so I have shared subscriptions to a lot of streaming sites - Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and Discovery+. I’ve seen people wanting to be able to see which particular server they’re connected to (Surfshark only lets you select the country and in some cases city), but I personally don’t have the need for this. Haven’t missed any particular countries not on the list, and haven’t seen servers be too crowded - the bubble icons next to servers will be half-full at most. According to their website, Surfshark has “3200+ servers in 65 countries”. These are really good results that even I was surprised with - 4-5% speed loss is a minuscule percentage. Ping is 13 as opposed to 10 without the VPN. Just ran a speed test (via ), and the results with the VPN on were 96% of my usual download speed, and 95% of my usual upload speed (screenshots below). Using the WireGuard protocol usually yields the best speeds. Speeds have consistently been above par, especially with the “fastest server” option (which in most cases results in Latvia on my end). I always have Surfshark on in the background while browsing, streaming and torrenting. Wouldn’t be able to comment on the Android and Linux side of things. The only pro for the Windows app for me is the Whitelister (split-tunneling) which isn’t yet available on Apple devices. Also both the macOS and iOS apps show bubble icons next to servers that indicate how filled up they are, this option isn’t available on Windows you have to manually turn this feature on for Windows and Android. I prefer the macOS app to the Windows one as they recently added the option to use Surfshark via the top status bar as opposed to the bottom dock bar. I use it on my iPhone, Mac and Windows laptop that I have set up with my TV via HDMI (my Smart TV isn’t that smart and doesn’t have an app store to download Surfshark directly onto it). ![]() There are loads of Youtubers and other influencers with their own codes but I wouldn’t be able to comment on what it would add up to with them. Got a 2-year deal plus 4 months free with a code from r/vpncoupons which amounted to $2.13 per month. One of the cheaper options out there that make it to the list of best VPNs on most review sites. Here are the main points (which I didn’t realize there would be so many of until I had finished writing): I’m halfway through my two-year Surfshark subscription, so I thought I’d share my insights from over the past year. ![]()

Terrestrial frogs (like the American toad (Bufo americanus), the wood frog (Rana sylvatica), the spring peeper (Hyla crucifer), the gray tree frog (Hyla versicolor) and the northern green frog when it decides to hibernate on land) basically let themselves freeze solid in their soil hideouts. These cookies ensure basic functionalities and security features of the website, anonymously. Necessary cookies are absolutely essential for the website to function properly. Aquatic frogs usually hibernate underwater and they usually spend the winter at the bottom of a pond or other body of water. This is a risky strategy, as smaller ponds can freeze over and frogs can sometimes die through a lack of oxygen. Some adult male common frogs spend the winter in ponds, secreted among leaves and mud at the bottom. Having permeable skins, frogs are at risk of drying out if they spend long in a place with no moisture. However if it really cold, the water will be frozen for longer, depriving the frogspawn of much needed oxygen. In Ohio, several hibernating individuals have been found in springs and in masses of leaves and aquatic vegetation on the bottom of small ponds (Walker, 1946). ![]() Can Frogspawn survive frost?įrogspawn can usually cope with a bit of cold weather, if a pond freezes, often the top layer of spawn closest to the surface will freeze but below the surface it will survive. In Maine, green frogs hibernate either underwater or underground from OctoberMarch (Hunter et al., 1999). The American bullfrog does hibernate in the winter and is generally not tolerant of freezing conditions (Degenhardt et al. If it gets too cold, though, they’ll die. Frogs can survive all winter like this, undergoing cycles of freezing and thawing. When in its frogcicle state, as much as 70 percent of the water in a frog’s body can be frozen, write researchers Jack Layne and Richard Lee in their 1995 article in Climate Research. Many think that these frogs would burrow into the muck at the bottom of a pond or river to “keep warm” and stay hidden from predators. Many of Ontario’s frogs, like the Bull Frog, Green Frog, Mink Frog and Pickerel Frog, hibernate in the water. In the case of most frogs, the right place is under water. Aquatic frogs, like our own southern leopard frog (Rana pipiens), usually spend the winter at the bottom of a pond or other body of water. During the winter, they go into a state of hibernation, and some can be exposed to temperatures below freezing. ![]() ![]() ![]() Voice Box, Mood Reel and Drone Lab are Ableton-designed Packs that each explore the spectrum of a specific sound palette. Want to figure out how much your monthly mortgage payment will be? For the mathematically inclined, here's a formula to help you calculate mortgage payments manually: Equation for mortgage payments Mortgage insurance: If your down payment is less than 20 percent of the home's purchase price, you'll probably be on the hook for mortgage insurance, which also is added to your monthly payment. As with property taxes, you pay one-twelfth of your annual insurance premium each month, and your lender or servicer pays the premium when it's due. If you live in a flood zone, you'll have an additional policy, and if you're in Hurricane Alley or earthquake country, you might have a third insurance policy. Homeowners insurance: Your insurance policy can cover damage and financial losses from fire, storms, theft, a tree falling on your home and other hazards. If you have an escrow account, you pay about one-twelfth of your annual tax bill with each monthly mortgage payment. Property taxes: Local authorities assess an annual tax on your property.Interest rates are expressed as an annual percentage. Interest: This is what the lender charges you to lend you the money.Principal: This is the amount you borrowed from the lender. You can edit these amounts (or even zero them out) as you're shopping for a loan - those costs might be bundled with your mortgage payment for escrow, but they don't affect your principal and interest. It can also account for homeowners association fees, if applicable. Note the rate varies depending on whether you’re buying or refinancing.Īs you enter these figures, a new amount for principal and interest will appear to the right.īankrate's calculator also estimates property taxes and homeowners insurance premiums based on your zip code, home price and other factors. Our calculator defaults to the current average rate, but you can adjust the percentage. Interest rate: Type in the rate you expect to pay.Loan term: Select the term - often 30 years, but maybe 20, 15 or 10 - to adjust the repayment schedule. You can enter either a dollar amount or a percentage. A down payment is the cash you pay upfront for a home, and home equity is the value of the home, minus what you owe. Down payment: Input the amount of your down payment (if you're buying) or the amount of equity you have (if you're refinancing).Home price: Enter the price of the home (if you're buying) or the current value of your home (if you're refinancing). The calculus behind mortgage payments is complicated, but Bankrate's Mortgage Calculator makes this math problem quick and easy. ![]() ![]() ![]() Max weight 25 lbs., Ages 6 Months+, Unisex. She knew “classroom English,” but didn’t know and understand everyday, informal English. In New York City, the education system proved to be a struggle for Julia. The Alvarez family fled back to New York City in 1960, only four months before the leaders of the underground activity, the Mirabal sisters, were assassinated by Trujillo’s men. Julia’s father, who had previously been involved with an underground organization with plans to assassinate the dictator of the Dominican, Trujillo, became involved again, to the point where the family had to leave. They then moved back to the Dominican Republic, where they had originally lived. The Alvarez family lived there until Julia was three months old. “I know how he felt,” she writes, “struggling to get all that life on paper.Julia Alvarez was born in New York City in 1950. “Pobrecito!” Alvarez says of the photographer who looks out mournfully on his ruined portrait when the children in the front row giggle, or when Tió sneezes just before the click. ![]() The formal poetic structure is self-imposed and, in a way, mirrors larger boundaries imposed on Alvarez and her work though language, politics and the European literary tradition.Īlvarez’s poems then, are like the family that she describes in “El Fotógrafo”: gussied-up and perfumed for the man under the black hood. Then again, their strict parameters begin to make sense when we acknowledge the confines of genre and canon. ![]() To cut their hair and bind their breasts and roamįar from their fathers’ houses on their own.Īlvarez tends to resist linear storylines and tidy conclusions, and that’s why the tight structure of the poems in The Woman–each consists of 30 lines divided evenly into three stanzas–may seem odd and even spark criticism. Alvarez admires Mary’s “Buddhist calm in the face of shocking news … My kind of virgin, guilt- and fancy-free!” Joan of Arc holds a similar appeal: In “My Kind of Woman,” she re-reads such biblical figures as Mary, Eve and Lot’s wife (“does she even have a name?”)–women traditionally read as either docile or corrupt. ![]() Alvarez shares what so many of us keep to ourselves, such as the pain of realizing the limits of our own vulnerable bodies and minds or the pleasure of rejoicing in one’s own skin. I devoured all of the poems in one sitting, and revisited them over the course of the following week. Reading The Woman I Kept to Myself was like walking hand-in-hand with an old friend through “Dante’s dark wood,” then re-emerging. In The Woman I Kept to Myself, her collection of poetry recently republished in paperback, Alvarez turns the lens on herself, traversing her life as a “Dominican, hyphen, American” from youth to middle age through a series of 75 autobiographical poems. ![]() Indeed, much of Alvarez’s oeuvre focuses on identity as a process of negotiation, as her characters inhabit multiple–and often overlapping–gender, cultural and political perspectives. That may feel like a betrayal of what we ‘owe’ our families, communities, our particular tribe. This means that we often present not just the one truth, our tribe’s truth, but the manifold truth, which includes the complexities, competing realities of any situation. Or to, in her words, “tell the truth, ‘manifold and one’”: For Julia Alvarez, the award-winning poet and author of bestselling novels such as How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents and In the Time of the Butterflies, the job of the storyteller is to enumerate the multiple competing truths and paradoxes that emerge from this experience of exile or displacement. The feeling of un-belonging or “between-ness”–in gender, country, language, family–is one that unites many of us who experience a certain ambivalence in our identities as citizens, daughters, artists and women. ![]() |
